Level 3 Certificate for Health Trainers (full standards)

What does the course aim to do and who is it aimed at?

The Department of Health announced the new role of Health Trainers in the Choosing Health White Paper in 2004. Health Trainers are a new workforce to be recruited from the community and working in the NHS and other local organisations, including local authorities, businesses, the voluntary and community sector.

The qualification’s main aim is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to act as Health Trainers, focusing on communicating with individuals and groups in their community, in order to help them change their behaviour or to improve their health and wellbeing and to raise awareness of health inequalities. 

The Certificate for Health Trainers covers things like:

• Helping people make healthier food choices
• Helping people diet, exercise and quit smoking
• Addressing people's behaviour towards health
• Motivating people to change

What will the learner study?

The Level 3 Certificate for Health Trainers comprises of four mandatory units:

Unit 301; Introduction to the roles and responsibilities of a Health Trainer
Unit 302; Establishing and developing relationships with communities while working as a Health Trainer
Unit 303; Communicate with individuals about promoting their health and wellbeing while working as a Health Trainer
Unit 304; Enable individuals to change their behaviour to improve their health and wellbeing as a Health Trainer.

Certificates of unit credit (CUC) will be issued to candidates for each successful unit completed. Candidates who complete a full qualification will receive in addition to their full certificate, a CUC for each unit achieved.

What qualifications will the learner achieve?

Level 3 Certificate for Health Care Trainers via City & Guilds, which is recognised vocational qualifications and recognised worldwide as proof of skills and competence in the chosen areas. The Certificate is closely aligned to induction requirements, codes of conduct and practice and the ‘NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework’. 

How will the learner’s progress be assessed?

The learner’s skills and knowledge will be assessed in the work place by an Aston appointed assessor/tutor who will assess the learner’s skills, competence and knowledge. The learner will demonstrate their skills and knowledge they gain through a portfolio of evidence based on their hands-on experience.

Are there any entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for learners undertaking this qualification, but the learner will undertake an initial assessment to determine the level of qualification they can undertake and they must be in full time employment.

What Careers could it lead to?

The Health Trainers qualification lets you use your skills across a range of diverse workplaces - including the NHS, local authorities, community groups, businesses and voluntary organisations.

Being a health trainer can even broaden the scope of an existing job - so it is great for people like pharmacy assistants, leisure centre workers, housing officers and union representatives in the workplace.

This qualification also provides the foundation for moving into more senior posts (e.g. family support workers) or into further education and training, through foundation degrees.
